Is Yahoo’s CEO, Marissa Mayer, taking a positive step forward for the company as she reaches backwards in time to recreate a face-time culture? Or is this an antiquated, already anachronistic way of doing business? As creative knowledge workers have come to expect flexibility in where they do their best work (according to Wired, an estimated 30 million Americans work from home part time), it seems that the benefits of face-to-face interaction among workers is only part of the equation. No longer a benefit simply offered to women who need to juggle day care of their children, virtual work actually enables global collaboration for both men and women—and for multicultural teams everywhere in the world. Isn’t this edict a little severe? Or is it a data-driven decision? Harvard Business Review seems to think so.
