Look: One of my new favorite sources of wisdom and insight when I have limited time is the altogether well done School of Life and their History of Ideas videos. Having experienced failure before and hoping that those failures might amount to a least of bit of wisdom and insight of my own, I was very delighted to watch SOL’s History of Failure – a fascinating look at how societies throughout the ages have looked upon failure and what we can learn from them.
Listen: Okay, as you’ll read below, I’m hardly a fan of the new Star Wars, but the hero’s journey, first illuminated by the mythologist Joseph Campbell, upon which George Lucas built his original tale, is utterly fascinating stuff. I think it is terrible for so many reasons (spoiler alert), that I’m questioning the sanity of much of the world, that any critic—any cognitive human—above the age of 9 could think The Force Awakens to be anything but complete rubbish. Oy vey! All of which got me wondering, besides the movie critic for the Vatican Paper—yes, there is such a thing—what are critics and fans outside the US saying about the latest installment in the Star Wars series? Do tell!
